State of Gaming: Blizzard’s Titan Cancelled

Back with a real quick State of Gaming…

Titan, the working title for the next Blizzard MMO was canceled recently and officially after seven years of development in a interview for “Titan” was suppose to be the next World of Warcraft for the company launching off undoubtedly numerous merchandise and most likely expansions on the game. However, it wasn’t to be.

Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime stated that “We had created World of Warcraft (Head to ONS Gaming’s W.o.W Corner), and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs.” It was to that end that they set out to make “Titan” of which was never officially announced but the gaming world and Blizzard acknowledged its existence. Yet for Blizzard and its team; Titan was to be the then most ambitious project they had ever attempted to create.

For seven long years we had heard very little of this game other than it would be different than W.o.W and most likely wouldn’t be within the Warcraft Universe, though it was never confirmed or denied. No real time frame was ever given and so the seven years of development could have just been creative ideas and basic coding and graphics opposed to what could have been. It is highly unlikely we will ever know how far along in real development it was. [ pre-alpha/alpha/pre-beta/etc…]

Chris Metzen, Blizzard’s senior vice president of story and franchise development, called the decision to cancel Titan “excruciating” in the interview with Polygon, and as a creative person myself I can understand. For me canceling anything is hard but is always even much more difficult the further you are into a project and canceling a seven year one has to be horrendous. It was also expressed in the interview that the project just didn’t feel right and that’s why they cancelled it.

For me I’m not super worried for Blizzard in this regard though I do hope it means that we may see a Diablo down the road that’s much more like Diablo 2 than 3. I also now truly expect for Blizzard to reveal what they meant about Warcraft and Warcraft 2 making a “return” according to their 2013 E3 statements. Many of us are hoping they mean they are going to re-release those games in such a format as to be able to play on modern gaming rigs officially/legally. But we will have to wait and see.
